ContestHappening 03 2017/18 | FWT Updates and next FWQ dates

From Japan to Canada, or would you rather go to 2* in Lebanon?

Somehow it's strange: after years, there's enough snow here in the German-speaking Alpine region to be able to hold freeride contests properly, but there are no contests taking place at the moment. Based on experience from previous winters, the dates have probably been placed a little later in the season to be on the safer side.

In any case, the dry spell will soon be over, as the 2* FWQ in Kappl is coming up next weekend. There are also contests in Germany and Lebanon. But first, here's some more information about the FWT.

Freeride World Tour 2018

The first tour stop of the FWT in Japan has been canceled or postponed to another location. As already suspected, the conditions in the remaining time window were no longer good enough to hold a worthy contest. Initially it was said that the contest would take place on Saturday, the last possible day, on the same "face" as last year's FWQ in the trees. However, this plan was scrapped for safety reasons, as it was apparently a bit icy on the two features this slope would have offered. Perhaps this decision will also benefit the entertainment value for spectators and we can look forward to a more interesting second contest in Kicking Horse, Andorra or Fieberbrunn instead.

The second and now first tour stop, after a four-year break on Canadian snow, is coming up in Kicking Horse (BC). The time slot this time is from February 3-9, 2018 and most of the riders on the tour are now on their way directly from Japan to the Canadian Rockies. Should the contest take place before the next ContestHappening, we will let you know! We have also received news regarding the field of female snowboarders at the FWT. Anna Orlova from Russia will take the starting place of Anne-Flore Marxer with a season wildcard. Marxer will therefore not be competing in the 2018 Tour, but we are not aware of the reasons for this and her Instagram account does not give the impression that it is due to injury.

FWQ News

The 2* FWQ in Kappl was supposed to take place two weeks ago, but was postponed due to heavy snowfall. Now the conditions on site look very good and we are looking forward to an exciting contest! The first FWQ qualifier in Germany is also coming up! At the Ride & Style on Hochfelln on February 3 and 4, freeride and freestyle will be combined, as a big air kicker (in two sizes) will be built into the contest face, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Nature Ride concept.

It's also worth mentioning that a freeride contest is to be held in Lebanon for the first time this year! The 2* contest, dubbed "Ride 4 Peace", will take place on February 17/18 in Mzaar Kfardebian ski resort.

Finally, here is another video from the 3* FJT stop in Les Arcs week
