At the penultimate tour stop of the FWT, things got down to business once again and in most categories it remained exciting right up to the end in Verbier. However, Kristoffer Turdell has already secured the FWT title in the men's skiing category. The day after the FWT, a 3* FJT contest took place at the Wildseeloder from the women's start, which we will also report on at the end.

4th FWT tour stop in Fieberbrunn

Austrians and Frenchmen share the winning places in Fieberbrunn: Lorraine Huber (AUT), Gigi Rüf (AUT), Mickael Bimboes (FRA) and Marion Haerty (FRA) took the victories in their category at the fourth stop of the tour. Manuela Mandl (AUT) finished second in the women's snowboarder category and will head to the final in Verbier as overall leader, as will Thomas Feurstein (AUT), who finished third in the snowboarder category behind FWT debutant and wildcard starter Elias Elhardt (GER). Eva Walkner (AUT) completed an Austrian double victory in the women's skiing category.

Just three days after the third tour stop in Andorra, the FWT held the penultimate competition of the 2018 season in Fieberbrunn. On the northern slope of the Wildseeloder, which was filled with a lot of snow this time, the aim was to qualify for the final at the Xtreme Verbier (March 31 to April 8, 2018) and the FWT 2019. Compared to previous years, the contest face was significantly snowier, with the somewhat overcast sky sometimes leading to difficult visibility conditions for the riders.

Women's snowboard

The victory in the women's snowboarding event went to defending champion Marion Haerty (FRA), who scored 68.67 points for her technical run. Manuela Mandl (AUT) took second place in Fieberbrunn and is now the favorite to win the overall title. The Viennese showed a fast, flowing run with two airs and collected 67 points. Anna Orlova (RUS) came third with 65.67 points. For Shannan Yates (USA), the result in Fieberbrunn means that she will be the only female snowboarder in the field not to qualify for the upcoming FWT season.

Women's skiing

The high level of skiing among the women was once again evident in Fieberbrunn: defending champion and last year's Fieberbrunn winner Lorraine Huber (AUT), who had a slow start to the season, made a comeback in Fieberbrunn and collected 88 points with a double cliff drop, a huge jump off a high rock and two more airs. 2015 and 2016 World Champion Eva Walkner from Kuchl (AUT) started with a similar line to Huber and impressed with another high air in the lower slope area. She received 84.67 points for her fluid run and finished second ahead of Rachel Croft (USA), who scored 74.67 points. Arianna Tricomi leads the overall ranking with 7200 points ahead of Eva Walkner with 6900 and Hazel Birnbaum (USA) with 5625 points, so it will be exciting right to the end. Lorraine Huber has moved up to fourth place with 5580 points thanks to her victory in Fieberbrunn and is therefore qualified for Verbier. "I'm absolutely delighted that I can now race the Bec des Rosses in Verbier. The victory means all the more to me after such a mixed start to the season," said Lorraine Huber. The battle for the overall title will be between Arianna Tricomi and Eva Walkner: Can Tricomi score points with her playful style against the experienced Walkner on the Bec des Rosses, a face that probably suits Walkner a little better?

Snowboard men

Gigi Rüf (AUT), who recently came third in Andorra, split his run into a big mountain and a freestyle section: He started with two jumps in the upper steep section and followed it up with two 360s in the lower section. 78.33 points gave the Vorarlberg native victory. Second place with 77 points at his FWT premiere went to wildcard holder Elias Elhardt (GER), who chose a creative and equally technical and playful line with numerous jumps on the rarely skied left side of the slope. Thomas Feurstein from Schruns (AUT) took third place with a series of 360s and 75.67 points. Thomas Feurstein thus maintains his lead in the overall standings and heads to Verbier with 6380 points. Lurking just behind him is Gigi Rüf with 100 points less to his name. Davey Baird (USA) is third with 6155 points.

Men's skiing

The victory in the men's category went to Mickael Bimboes (FRA), who chose a unique line and attempted a transfer on the groove at the bottom of the slope, which no other skier had ever done in a contest on the Wildseeloder. Second place went to Andorra winner Kristofer Turdell (SWE), who scored 85.33 points. Third place went to George Rodney (USA) with 78.63 points for a backflip in the upper section, paired with an alternative line and a drop at the end, which has never been jumped in a contest before. Stefan Häusl from Strengen (AUT) rode his last competition in his inimitable style and shone with a technically extremely difficult jump out of a chute. However, he was unable to land an air in the lower section completely cleanly. He finished eleventh with 64.67 points. "It all started for me in Fieberbrunn, where I won the first Austrian freeride contest and my first FWT contest. It's wonderful for me to finish my contest career here after nine years on the tour," said Stefan Häusl, bidding farewell to the FWT. "Now I'm concentrating on training my junior team at Skiclub Arlberg and on film projects." Fabio Studer (AUT) from Koblach finished in twelfth place with 60 points after a high cliff drop and an alley-oop 360. Felix Wiemers from Biedenkopf (GER) crashed and finished 21st, meaning that Studer and Wiemers are no longer qualified for the coming season for the first time after several years on the tour.

Kristofer Turdell is already the overall winner with 6680 points. Markus Eder (ITA) is second in the overall standings with 5340 points ahead of Loic Collomb-Patton (FRA), who has 60 points less. Felix Wiemers in 20th place, Fabio Studer in 21st place and Stefan Häusl in 22nd place did not qualify for the final.

3* Freeride Juniors Tour Fieberbrunn

The next generation of freeriders provided the crowning finale to the FWT weekend in Fieberbrunn on Saturday as part of the 3* Freeride Junior Tour contest. The next highlight on Tyrolean soil awaits the juniors from 21-23.3.18 with the Freeride Junior World Championships in Kappl-Paznaun. 69 riders from 18 nations, including ski sport exotics such as Brazil's Fabricio Borboni, impressed on Saturday from the women's start of the Wildseeloder with an incredibly high level, as Freeride World Tour founder and CEO Nicolas Hale-Woods confirms: "It's great to see how strong the youngsters are presenting themselves here and that very good things are coming up. The juniors are riding at a level that is hardly inferior to that of the elite riders. We can draw a very positive conclusion from the stop in Fieberbrunn. Already in the elite competition we saw a show which, in my opinion, has rarely been so good and spectacular here on the Wildseeloder. The junior competition was the perfect end to the freeride weekend in Fieberbrunn. "

And Fieberbrunn had a premiere in store for the grand finale: for the first time, the junior riders competed in two age categories. In addition to the 14 to 18-year-olds, the 10 to 14-year-olds were also able to show off their talent from the start at the Wildseeloderhaus. Just like the day before with the elite riders, there was also an Austrian victory to celebrate in the junior category with Stefanie Freimann. Freimann prevailed against the German Jil Lehnert and the Italian Clementina Massocco. There was even a triple Austrian victory in the U-14 category: Tobias Wallner won ahead of Jacob Müller and Paul Rainer-Rist. In the men's over-14 ski category, a Spanish winner's face was beaming: Abel Moga won ahead of Joan Aracil from Andorra and Alex Lundstrom from the USA. The snowboard categories were also international: New Zealander Finn Duffy won the boys' category, while Dutchwoman Jacquelina DeJong won the girls' category.

The full results can be found here. Another highlight now awaits the freeride juniors in Tyrol with the Freeride Junior World Championships in Kappl from March 21 to 23.
