Snow condition

In Chiemgau, there have already been many sunny spots up to the summits. On a consistently 30° pure northern slope, the high forest around 1500m still has some carpet pad, many mountain pines are free. Forest roads in side valleys still have an irregular layer of old snow, which ends the bike ascent below 1000 m and you have to carry your bike again in places. On the north in open areas, the old snow cover still comes down to around 1000 m, but is very thin and you have to search your way through hollows. Fresh snow: 0-5 cm up to 1100m, then 10 cm at 1300 and almost 20 cm from 1500. 30, like my colleague further west, but not here.

Snow quality

The fresh snow is really great. Cold, super fast, great to ride. On the steeps, you'll always hit the compact hard snow during 'braking turns', but that doesn't bother you much. Cruising is best in really flat terrain, because the snow is really fun.

from about 35°, the snow, which was hardly bound on my tour, slides behind your own turns. you have to know, but it is easy to handle. I also saw many wind signs from a distance. Boards could possibly come off there and also become trickier. But as the LWD writes, rather above 1600 (2)

Overall impression

I know Upper Bavaria is well covered with CRs, but this one has to be today. For the first time this season, I'm giving it more than 2* overall. and in April! (or so). The four* are of course mega subjective, today everything finally worked out. Dream day anyway. Finally did the tour that's been on my bucket list for years but something always spoke against it and got it perfectly (firstline!). Many people had obviously already mothballed their winter sports equipment, there were only a handful of people there, although the whole region only has to share 3 or 4 spots that are still feasible. I would never have thought that even the narrow skis could be so much fun.
Tip for tomorrow. The super fluffy fresh snow will be packed down very quickly. Look for some hidden spots with daunting carrying routes. Crampons are advantageous, you will hit the hard surface on the ascent.
Outlook: If the low next week brings the snow line down to around 1000 m, there could be another chance here.
