Firn und Sonne Spitzing
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
The high snow cover from the summit to the valley makes all descents possible. Thaw today, but enough material to thaw. We were only at around 1,600, up to 1,300 rain, then a few mm of new snow drizzle further up.
Snow quality
Very different. Greasy firn in the sun. Above and in the shade: good to ski, but hard surface. Old snow cover bearing, no broken harsch. Close to the valley and in the shade: rather unpleasantly icy or frozen hard.
Risks
Huge avalanche cone Wild Fräulein from last week has reached one of two ascent tracks. Old snow with sliding snow cracks in the steep grassy terrain visible several times on various south to SW slopes.
Overall impression
Sunny walk with a wheat beer on the hut terrace. Fewer people than feared, better downhill conditions than expected, although no pow.
