Snow report Oberstdorf, 02/25/2021
heute mal nicht expo s
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
very good. almost all tours in the area (from approx. 1000m) can be done without restrictions. some streams have to be crossed on foot again, carrying skis. expo s does run out quite quickly.
Snow quality
with the right timing, in all expos with s, perfect sulz and firn. but it will be quite challenging to assess this correctly in a longer descent. all expos with n, well!!! more on that later ...
Risks
pretty safe, if you pay attention to the daily course. departure expo s, before 11h and wet snow is not an issue.
Overall impression
although it's very warm, it's still february. that means the sun is still too low to ski the expos without s!!! the consequence is that everything with expo n and steeper than 35° is currently anything but easy to ski down. there are quite a few footprints on the summit slope of the schochen. it's just about 40° and stays hard all day.
also, rain is forecast for the area on saturday morning, from 0am onwards. nobody really needs that. however, it could be that this will form such a thick "ice shell" that the crampons will no longer work. so anyone planning anything with expo n should consider whether crampons and ice axes are a sensible addition to their equipment.
snowshoers and hikers will not really enjoy this rain. expo-s remains good and will continue to firn up even with the lower temperatures predicted.
now i'm taking a break because i can't afford the over 200mtbs on the giebelhs, from the previous weekend.
p.s. there are a few more current status perspectives in the pictures for those in the know.
p.p.s. oh yes, one more thing. today there were already 2 fighter helicopters. hopefully they won't multiply like bacteria, otherwise we'll have to make entry and exit regulations for the valley in the coming week. i would also suggest time slots for "hovering" on the burr. it would be a shame if such an expensive device collided with another one ...
