Snow condition

3 von 5 Sterne

After last week's thaw, winter has finally returned. The snow conditions are about average for the time of year. While there is a compact layer of snow on the valley floor, the southern slopes have been bare again up to medium altitudes. Last night's fresh snow increased significantly with altitude. While there is around 15cm in the valley, there was around 30cm at 1600m and even over 40cm of fresh snow at 2000m. Where the ground was not even, you could still feel it in places. This was also the case on rocky and stony terrain.

Snow quality

A strong wind was blowing above 2000m. There are many snow drifts. But the snow is not really wind-packed anywhere. The best snow was between 1700 and 2000m. Really deep powder!

Risks

Considerable. There were large accumulations of drifting snow at altitude. Today the snow was still very airy and not bound. In this respect, the danger is likely to increase tomorrow when the snow settles and binds.

Overall impression

4 von 5 Sterne

Surprisingly, there has been significantly more snow at altitudes above 1600m than forecast by the weather reports. Already the 2nd surprise (after the big dump on 6.12.2020 with southerly winds) this winter. It can go on like this.

Happy holidays, stay healthy and be careful! Foreign injured persons will be turned away due to lack of capacity in the hospital .
