Snow condition
First "ski tour" in the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm ski area on the Kampen, proved to be a great start to the 16/17 season! Thanks to the meadow terrain and well-chosen track (a complete descent on unprepared terrain down to the valley with casual powder turns was possible!!!- Snow cover in the valley (780m): approx. 15cm- Snow cover 1,450m: approx. 35cm- Snow cover 1,800m: approx. 40-50cmThe infrastructure in the Kitzbühel ski area is of course in full swing and by the weekend, several lifts/ slopes (valley runs incl.!!) with the best snow quality will be available for winter enthusiasts.
Snow quality
First snow from Sunday falls on mostly already frozen ground! Especially in the altitudes of 700-1,400 m, the initially very wet snow was able to form and bond very well as a compact base due to the now very low temperatures.the second batch of snow (finest powder!) from Sunday to Monday now forms a very respectable basis for the upcoming winter! at altitudes above 1.600m, the snow is "too powdery" and unfortunately there is still a danger of it sinking through on cranberry bushes and other obstacles! this snow first has to settle to form a base. fortunately, the snow is falling with virtually no wind influence. due to the very low temperatures, the surface is already beginning to transform above 1,600m!
Risks
Personal assessment of the avalanche warning level (as LWD Tirol is not yet active):- 780-1,600 level 1- 1,600-2,000 level 2As the possibilities in open ski terrain are still very limited due to the lack of a base, there is actually only a theoretical avalanche danger on very steep meadow slopes.due to the forecast low temperatures, the situation should remain the same.renewed heavy precipitation from Thursday will of course fundamentally change the situation.
Overall impression
At least in our latitudes, you couldn't wish for a better starting point for the upcoming winter!!! Of course, it's still very early and nobody knows what winter will bring (except perhaps the oracle)....but you should celebrate the festivals as they fall and simply go into the mountains with open eyes, respect and fun.
