Snow condition
Ski tours in the Upper Black Forest start at around 800m, above the 1000m mark there is a good basis to build on.
Snow quality
The rain of the last few days has formed a nice crust, on which there is now a layer of fresh snow of approx. 5-10 cm. In the valley, the snow cover is still completely soaked. At the summit (Herzogenhorn) it has already solidified again due to the temperatures. The last few meters to the summit are very blown off and more recommended with skates.
Risks
There was almost no wind in the valley and gale-force gusts of wind from the southwest. At the top, I had to hold on to everything I wasn't carrying on my body - i.e. the usual steep slopes were really loaded and this on a mirror-smooth crust of rain! A look at the SLF avalanche situation report in the Jura might help here.
Overall impression
Short after-work ride up the Horn. Jo, it was nice to be out there. At the summit, I was briefly worried that my skis would fly off and the descent was creamy and crusty - not quite fun.
