Snow condition
Rarely have we seen so much snow down in the Stubai Valley! Skiing down into the valley is no problem. In general, there is a very good base in the forest, even where it gets a bit thicker. The snow situation looks really good at all altitudes (a nearby measuring station also recorded an increase in snow cover of 180cm from 5.12. to 7.12.).
Snow quality
The last snowfall yesterday (approx. 20cm) fell completely without wind and was super powdery due to the cold temperatures. This fresh snow lies on an equally soft and thick layer of powder, which creates the feeling of bottomless powder when you're skiing down! It almost doesn't get any better than this :)
Risks
A few sliding snow avalanches from somewhat lower terrain (< approx. 1300m) on the south side were visible, and as the last snowfall fell completely without wind, this covered possible drift snow. Above the tree line there were no avalanches to be seen, but with the forecast foehn, drifting snow will form again. The snow surface is very powdery and loose, so there is a lot of snow that can be transported, and you should also bear in mind the possible problem of old snow on the north side, as well as snow breakage in the forest. A few trees have already toppled over due to the heavy snow load and some are still hanging at a significant angle.
Overall impression
Today was even better than on Tuesday!
In the upper part of the tour, you could ski nicely above the tree line before heading into a somewhat steeper forest. The conditions there were fantastic with deep powder snow all the way down into the valley.
Use the next few days before it warms up on Monday. There are rarely better conditions for treeruns in this area than at the moment!
