Snow condition

Thanks to the spring temperatures, the snow conditions are getting worse by the day. Just like last weekend, we went cycling in the Mangfallgebirge towards Valepp. The cirque we visited today looked good last Saturday, but today it was more of a tragedy. The sun had done a good job and some of the snow had slipped out through the gullies. Our goal for today's tour could no longer be reached sensibly, so we broke off at just under 1500 m. The bottom line is that the options for meaningful tours are very limited.

Snow quality

The snow was frozen on the surface and with the high temperatures and sun, the snow softened very quickly. We didn't consistently encounter classic firn on the east side. Where the sun had been shining for a long time, the snow was already soft, where it was only briefly there was firn. In the shade, we encountered the hard armor of the snow cover. Departure was around 10 o'clock.

Classic spring conditions, start early and finish early. Colder nights would be an advantage, then the time window would also increase a little.

Overall impression

Spring temperatures, perfect weather, hardly any people around and we were accompanied by a familiar PG face :). The ski gear will now have to make way for bikes and climbing shoes...
