Snow report Salzburger Land Süd, 02/11/2018

Snow condition

We went touring on the Felbertauern today. We were mainly on the north-east exposure, starting at around 1600m. Solid snow conditions, but you should keep your eyes open, especially at terrain transitions. From time to time, stones are hidden not far below the snow. However, these places are easy to recognize with good visibility. From the start, the snow was unbound (hardly any settling) on a hard base. At lower altitudes, the snow was around 10 cm deep and had grown to a maximum of around 30 cm with increasing altitude. The snow had virtually no wind influence. Now for the horror: walking was not only tedious, but also caused high blood pressure. As soon as the terrain approached 30°, it was 1 meter forward, 50 cm back and sometimes you just slipped away. The snow didn't hold at all on the hard surface when walking. Some of us continued on foot, which was better on steeper terrain than with skins.

Snow quality

Top snow, super fluffy and great to ride. Unfortunately, you hit the hard surface from time to time. That's why it's not enough for 4 stars.

During the course of the day, quite a few, but very, very small loose snow slides came down from steep, sunny terrain. Otherwise, we could not perceive any dangers as the snow was unbound. The risk of falling was higher than the risk of burial. Watch out for sluff in steeper sections! There was a thin layer of frost in shady sections. This should be kept in mind for the coming precipitation, as well as the fact that the current fresh snow lies unbound on a hard base.

Overall impression

Beautiful weather, good snow and unpleasant ascent conditions. Unfortunately, we had to abandon the tour before reaching our actual destination due to the arduous ascent. That's why we only gave it 3 stars.
