Snow report Bregenzerwald, 01/21/2017

Nette Skitour (bis ca. 1.900) in Nordost ausgerichteten Hängen. Die Standardabfahrt ist komplett zerlegt. Mit ein bisschen Geschick kann man noch Genußturns im Gelände fahren.

Everything up to the tree line is okay in all exposures. Here you can make turns almost without hesitation. As soon as the forest is finished, the wind signs are recognizable and the variability of the snow cover increases. All in all, good up to the summit.

On the shady side and in sheltered areas there is powder (3-4 stars) which is very fun to ski. On the sunny side (1-2 stars) there is a cover up to the summit and above the forest there are also wind covers. Some of these are still rideable and some are really annoying. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, the sun has clearly gained strength again.

Risks

Snow plumes (south wind) could be seen for short periods on the surrounding peaks today. The temperature has also risen significantly with increasing altitude. This naturally contributes to subsidence. The beginnings of cracks can be seen on many steep flanks (> 1800 m). Larger snow slabs have also come loose in places. During the ascent we saw pronounced surface frost. The crystals are almost 2 cm thick. Beautiful to look at in the sun, but also the weak layer from the morning.

Despite the crowds here, it's still the best option for us in the current conditions. The delicate situation in the high mountains tends to motivate us to tour below the tree line. In this area, it is also possible to ski on steep slopes (approx. 40°). Despite the busy conditions, we were able to enjoy a great descent with big grins.
