Snow condition
Top snow conditions in the Langen Grund right up to the road. We haven't seen this much snow in the Kitzbühel region for a long time and it's only mid-December, so the last front brought another 20cm - so about 30-40cm since last weekend.
Snow quality
Not super light despite the cold temperatures - decent sinking depth and braking effect. Track work extremely strenuous - especially in dense forest, as there was no consolidation in the substructure (knee-deep).
Risks
The layer of frost from the last cold spell is still highly active as a sliding layer. Nothing has changed significantly over the course of the week (see also the Avalanche Tirol blog) and from approx. 1600m onwards there are long-distance and self-releases on steeper crests in otherwise moderate alpine terrain. Depths of about 30-40cm. Fortunately, everything was very small-scale, so that a safe line selection was possible in the hilly terrain and we couldn't find a layer of frost in the dense forest.
Overall impression
09.12 (Saturday): Would have been very good with better stability. We then canceled the tour because the alpine terrain was too tricky for us and the track work in the forest was too extreme.
Under 1600m still great, very deep snow, and more stable - therefore 3 stars
