Snow condition
There is very little snow in the Ammergau mountains. Our ski tour in one of the north-facing cirques of the Graswang valley had to be aborted due to a lack of snow. Even at medium altitudes from 1600m upwards, we couldn't find any really solid snow cover. In the scree fields the stones are sticking out, mountain pines are not covered in snow and there is only sparse snow in the forests. The last snowfall on 27.12 only brought 2cm of fresh snow.
Snow quality
On the ski tour, the snow quality was less good and the snow cover was very hard. However, it is relatively easy to ski on, as the hardpack can usually withstand the weight of a skier. There is now 2 cm of fresh snow on top of this firm, very smooth layer, which increases the grip.
Risks
The avalanche situation was less of a concern as the snow cover is very compact and stable. The amounts are also very small. However, the situation in wind-exposed areas cannot be assessed.
Overall impression
At the moment, the conditions in this area don't really allow for anything except drinking coffee!
