Snow report Montafon, 04/01/2016

Snow condition
You can ski down to 1,700 m without any problems. There is still snow everywhere, but the amounts are below average. A lot has melted away in a week. When it finally freezes through, nice firn descents would be possible, as many gullies are still very well filled.
Snow quality
Wet from early in the morning due to the clouds. From approx. 2,500 m onwards, it is stable. Without wind it would still be powdery here. It quickly changes from wet to windswept. The Sahara dust was clearly visible over a large area. On the descent, it was completely soaked below 2,400 m (especially around the stones it was bottomless) and the skis were sticking unpleasantly.
Risks
Typical late spring conditions and due to a lack of radiation, the slopes would already be critical in the late morning. I only saw base avalanches below 1,800 m. Up here, there were a lot of loose snow slides from extremely steep terrain, which were of a considerable size in the run-out.
Overall impression
Nice to have been out there. The ascent was better than the descent today. Hope it gets a bit colder again, then we could do a few more nice descents.
