Snow report Tannheimer Valley, 04/08/2021
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Altitude
1000 - 1700m
Avalanche warning level
considerable (3)
Exposition
Snow condition
overnight at least 40cm of freshies. but where there was previously snow, the snow covers obstacles (stones, holes, streams, fences, roots), but you still push through and have to drive with foresight. in addition, the amount of snow is no longer sufficient to completely cover the trails. i.e. foresighted tracking is also required.
Snow quality
the snow quality depends heavily on the expo and the sunlight. in all drifting snow areas (see below) hard "pressed snow", real work when skiing. due to the heavy loads, areas with knee-deep and ankle-deep snow change from one meter to the next. only limited fun. south-facing, today from 13h sunshine full. there is certainly a lid on it tomorrow. in wind-calmed shady areas, great pow.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: strong
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
i've seen almost everything: loose snow slides in sunlit flanks, snow boards behind cornices, cracks in the snow cover when tracking and a relatively large loose snow slide that i triggered by stepping off a cornice in the gully below. so the situation is rather tense and the bayer. 3 was definitely justified. of course, that didn't prevent me from skiing quite steep gullies.
Avalanche activity
Altitude: 1500 m
Overall impression
due to the warming, starting tomorrow, the danger of loose and wet snow slides will increase in the sunlit areas. in expo n and o the pow will remain.
