Snow condition
Early bird ski tour in the Mangfall mountains. We were only on the lee side today. The snow conditions there are solid thanks to the 40 cm of fresh snow. The strong wind will not have improved the snow conditions in exposed areas. Due to the poor visibility today, we were hardly able to assess neighboring exposures. If you look for wind-protected locations, ski tours are now possible without damaging your equipment. After the snowfall with settling, the long-term average will be reached.
Snow quality
Beautiful powder snow that was as smooth as butter. I had hoped for colder temperatures with really fluffy fresh snow as a result (5-star snow). But that's complaining at the highest level.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: strong
Altitude: 1000 m – 1600 m
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
The avalanche situation will continue to worsen. The drift snow was easy to disturb on the ascent. Later in the morning, quite heavy sleet showers set in. The wind was unpleasantly strong in the snow corridors and shifted almost all the snow. The dangers lurk near and far from the ridge. There are some unusual cornices in the forest.
Overall impression
Nice, quiet morning with good snow and great company. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the next few days as the temperature rises. A passive choice of tour is essential.
