Variations of snow cover

Ski touring weekend in the Schladminger Tauern. Over the weekend there was around 20 cm to 25 cm of fresh snow. The snow conditions are extremely inhomogeneous. The wind has been working hard over the course of the winter (different wind directions) and has also turned in the valleys, so it's not easy to find good snow conditions. Where there is snow, you can let it run. There is also a lack of base in the denser forest.

Powder snow
Wind drifted snow

On Saturday, we found perfect powder snow in a corner that was reasonably sheltered from the wind. Today, the snow became heavier later in the morning due to the sunlight. However, it was still easy to ski today. From tomorrow, the downhill fun will be over where the sun went today.

Wind drifted snow

South-West

Intensity: low

Altitude: 1600 m – 2000 m

Risks

Old snow problem
North North-West

Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)

Yesterday the wind kept coming from the northwest to the north and today there was even no wind. From around 1600 m, the fresh snow wasn't always well connected to the old snow cover, which cost a few nerves when making tracks. There was a lot of drift snow close to the ridge, so we looked for very defensive entry options. The transitions from a little to a lot of snow should be judged critically, especially near the crest.

Worse

A very fine ski touring weekend with good snow. The weather played along on both days on the descent. Beautiful landscape and we were also able to observe many chamois on both days.
