Exposition
Snow condition
Rather below average, most of the ridges are blown off and there has also been considerably more snow here in the Kalkkögel area. Thanks to the toboggan run, however, you can get down almost as far as Grinzens! In some parts of the terrain, watch out for stones, which are currently slightly covered in snow and therefore easy to overlook.
Snow quality
If you choose the right exposure and stay in the wind-protected gullies, you will find really nice downhill conditions. Nevertheless, you can still feel the old crust or old avalanche cones in places, so you shouldn't ski completely without the handbrake. The snow is best in the north-east to north-west exposures, with less fresh snow in the western exposures and the crust much more pronounced in places.
Risks
Wind intensity: No Wind (0 km/h)
There were no spontaneous or fresh avalanches to be seen. More dangerous at the moment is the risk of slipping on the sometimes hard surface. Many north-western ridges have blown off. We were on the more frequently (but not regularly) used off-piste terrain. The weak layer of old snow is not as pronounced here in the gullies as in other areas. Nevertheless, the information from the LWD should be quite accurate over a large area, and a look at the snow cover confirmed this once again.
Overall impression
Nice day in the terrain, finally out and about again and good snow. The snow situation should remain good over the next few days, and the cold temperatures will help. About our tour today: We went up to Hoadl in the morning and then set off towards Kalkkögel. Both above the Dohlennest and above the Kemater Alm, there is plenty of good snow and beautiful gullies to be found.
