Snow condition
Old snow in this corner still reaches up to ~1100m on the shady side, much higher on the sunny side. On the German side of the Dürrnbachhorn, you can ski back down to the parking lot via the cross-country trail. Surprisingly, we found 10-30 cm of fresh snow on the compact rain crust on our windward slope. the wind influence increases strongly with increasing altitude.
Snow quality
Super nice powder up to approx. 1200m, harder below that
Risks
Very tense. LBB 3. thought long and hard about whether we should venture up the almost 30° (!) steep summit slope, but then decided against it due to the local snow cover.
Overall impression
Blower in April! More of it! My tip: look for sparse forest and/or tracks just below the tree line, stay above 20° (the lower, the slower) and below 30° gradient and enjoy the last pow. And if in doubt, choose slopes facing the wind, as there is inevitably only the snow that has fallen with less wind. Watch out there!
