Overall, the amount of snow in the Außerfern is very low for this time of year and the more south-facing ski tours are not really feasible. Apart from that, the snow conditions and touring options are heavily dependent on the altitude and exposure. Nevertheless, it is sometimes possible to start from the valley. The snow is very strongly influenced by the wind and is accordingly transported.

Snow quality

On our ski tour in a northern cirque, the snow quality was extremely poor. The wind and the warmth of Sunday and Monday had a strong influence on the snow cover. As a result, the snow varied greatly and we encountered a hard snow cover, wind-blown hard snow crust, powder snow and powdery deep snow. Unfortunately, the transitions are also difficult to recognize and therefore the skiing pleasure falls by the wayside.

Risks

Due to the high temperatures on Sunday and Monday with the overnight cooling, the snow cover has stabilized. Nevertheless, you should still be very careful as the wind (large cornices, wind gusts...) is blowing strongly and a snow slab (from yesterday or the day before) could be observed from very steep terrain. Numerous loose snow slides can be observed from very steep terrain. There are also wet snow slides on all sun-exposed slopes (during the course of the day), even at 2200m(!!!). Together with the heavy snow load, this can be seen as quite critical and I would rate the value of the LLB for our ski tour today as rather deceptive.

Note on Conditions Reports

The ConditionsReports are user-generated content - from freeriders for freeriders! Recently, a distinction has been made between MiniReport, which offers a quick status report with location, image/video and text, and ProReport, which requires more detailed information and can be uploaded by advanced users.

Every registered user can enter the MiniReport in the WebApp, iOS app or Android app. If you would also like to upload ProReports, please write to us at conditionsreporter@powderguide.com so that we can activate it for you and briefly explain it to you!
If you need help with the operation or have suggestions for improvement, please write to us at app@powderguide.com!
