Alpine tour before the snowfall

Snow condition

In the high alpine terrain around the Taschachferner it is ok. Crevasses are usually well covered on the usual descents. Nevertheless, sometimes the bare ice comes out in places where the wind was active. The Wildspitze north face is currently not recommended for skiing. It looked pretty bare and blown out. The Jubiläumgsgrat is reasonably easy to walk with more rock than usual, not very overweighted and only short bare ice passages. Descent via the Taschachferner is possible to the parking lot without carrying passages

Snow quality

Almost everywhere broken snow or wind-compressed snow surface. Only on the north side in sheltered hollows above 2500m is there still powder snow. Load-bearing firn can only be found in a few places. The snow is often boggy and the sinking depth is already too deep by midday.

Avalanche activity was very low. Danger of falling on partially hard layers had to be taken into account.

Overall impression

Vor dem Angekündigten Schneefall haben viele Leute noch die passablen Bedingungen genutzt. Dementsprechend überfüllt waren die Winterräume der Vernagthütte und des Taschachhauses. Im Gelände war dann wenig los und noch unverspurter Pulver zu finden.
