Snow condition
10 to 20 cm of very fine powder on a partly hard surface. Stones are far from being completely covered in snow. On sunny slopes there is significantly less snow and a hard crust under the fresh snow. Steeper north-facing slopes still have plenty of stones with compact snow cover. Hollows below 2400 m are better snowed in.
Snow quality
10 to 20 cm of light powder. fell completely without wind in the valley basin. wind influence only minimally noticeable in the upper part of the northern slopes towards the afternoon.
Risks
Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)
Loose snow slide on very steep northern slopes and slide on steep south-eastern slopes with sun crust under the fresh snow
Overall impression
Started at the col du Lautaret. It is advisable to ask the café at the top of the pass for information about current conditions. The café only opens at 9 a.m. as the morning ski tour is due to start beforehand. It's worth the wait for first-hand information. On recommendation, we set off for the north basin despite the fog at the pass. Less than 200 m later, the blue sky prevailed and the already groomed route to the saddle was visible. Steeper gullies were also possible today. Beware of freshly snow-covered rocks. Stone contact was unavoidable today. The area has a lot of potential if you are prepared to shoulder your skis and trudge up the last few meters. Just above the top of the pass there is a light forest for relaxed cruising.
