Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Altitude
1300 - 2100m
Avalanche warning level
moderate (2)
Exposition
Snow condition
Nothing at all at the bottom and on the south side - from 1500 and in a sheltered location, a usable base (0.5-1m base). On top of that 20-30 cm of fresh snow from the past few days.
Snow quality
Very variable: cold powder to wet fresh snow depending on exposure.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: low
Above: 1900 m
Risks
Wind intensity: Low (< 20 km/h)
Close to the ridge and in the gullies, drift snow is still accessible - floes up to 40 cm thick, so quite relevant.
Avalanche activity
Dry slab avalanche
Altitude: 2000 m
Snow slab near the ridge in drift snow.
Overall impression
We took advantage of the relatively stable conditions to ride the gullies around the Obertauern. At the right altitude and expo, there's a lot of dust - but the surface you occasionally hit is rather hard.
