Snow condition
There has probably never been so much snow at this altitude (over 2000m) since 1999. A real dream, and I have rarely experienced so much snow overnight (from 22h-07h). In the village there was about 50cm, on First probably about 60-70cm. We didn't expect this, not even the SLF, which even changed the danger level to high in the morning.
Snow quality
The powder was good in the early morning, almost too thick. When there were still no tracks, it was almost impossible to make any progress. In the afternoon, as it warmed up, the south-facing slopes and all slopes below 1500m became increasingly damp and lazy.
Risks
The avalanche danger was still set to high in the morning. In Lütschental, an avalanche actually reached the valley floor. Today, Sunday, the danger level was only considerable. A bit sneaky, because in my opinion the situation has worsened with the strong storm today. In particular, the drifting snow accumulations are very susceptible to disruption and more unpredictable.
Overall impression
Even if spring arrives next week, winter is likely to continue for a while at this altitude.
The Firstbahn is running continuously this year. Ski operations are suspended after Easter. However, this still allows long ski tours from Schreckfeld or First, e.g. Schwarzhorn, Widderfeldgrätli or Faulhorn.
