Overall impression
Snow condition
In the valley it has unfortunately turned green here and there in the last few days due to the warmth, foehn and rain. Further up, however, there is still plenty of snow.
Snow quality
Since yesterday overnight, the Hochjoch area has had about 15 (Kapell area) - 30 cm (Kreuzjoch/Sennigrat area) of really cold powder. The powder is mostly on a hard old snow cover; only in the north-facing areas on still soft old snow cover. "Only" 4 stars, because of course there can always be more and it can be deeper, but it was perfect for skiing today! On the west and south sides in the afternoon, from approx. 1,500 - 1,600 m, the snow was wet (but still easy to ski).
Risks
Caution and restraint are definitely advisable! In the Kreuzjoch area, the cold and light powder has been transported to exposed areas and slopes facing away from the wind. Although these drift snow packs are relatively easy to recognize and rather thin, they can easily be triggered as a snow slab by a single skier. Smaller snow slabs could be successfully blown up on all slopes and behind every edge of the terrain; and wherever there was even a little blowing in, there was a small snow slab.
Overall impression
Dream day with 20 - 30 cm of fine cold powder on hard, fast old snow cover; windless and cloudless from around 11 am.
