Snow condition
In the first row of mountains, you can't actually start from the valleys, even though we tried today. From the second row onwards (e.g. Geigelstein area), the valley parking lots are usually already at the level of the very thin but hard layer of old snow at an altitude of approx. 700 m (in open areas). In the forest, the base only starts at around 800 m. The snow situation is really usable above 900m, here there is a continuous, supporting rain crust. above half then quickly much more. today we were very defensive only on a forest hill at 1200m, there easily 70 - 100 cm of snow on average. A dieux Steinski!
Snow quality
The above-mentioned crust was often blown bare even in more sheltered locations such as aisles. But not so bad, skis like a piste. Only sometimes surprisingly comes out between snow pockets. In the actually quite dense summit forest, visibly wind-influenced, but fluffy, deep pow.
Risks
Read the situation reports! Wind signs deep into the trees. I will definitely stay away from steep slopes above 1000 m for the next few days. With wide skis, flat terrain is still quite good. At low altitudes it was (still!) uncritical today with 5cm of dust on crust.
Overall impression
Today we were taken to a summit that was still unknown to me, right on our doorstep, and finally ended the pre-season with one last grass slide at the bottom.
We should have driven a little further in today; here in the foothills we were still a day too early, for the three stars you have to drive a little further into the mountains, like we did yesterday. From tomorrow onwards, the mountain pine slopes should no longer be a problem as far as the amount of snow is concerned. (Even if I probably won't dare to go up to any of the mountain pines ;)
