Overall impression
Snow condition
Still very good. We got another 5 cm of fresh snow on top overnight. We started at 640m and were almost exclusively on west-facing slopes today.
Snow quality
A lot helps a lot, unless it's too warm. And unfortunately the night was far too warm. At the start at 7 a.m. it was already +1 degree. This was immediately noticeable in the snow quality and especially when making tracks. From about 900 meters it was much better and above 1100 meters it was nice and cold and fluffy again.
Risks
Still critical, there was an avalanche on the Feldberg today. When skiing downhill, we often hit the ice crust, the snowfall of the last few days is still lying on top without any binding and is waiting to be cleared away. In contrast to yesterday, it was windy again today and the danger in the forest now also comes from the trees, on which thick, wet snow packs regularly come crashing down. Every now and then, the whole branch comes down with it.
Overall impression
Somehow the worm was in it today. This morning we put the inner shoes into the shells incorrectly and then only changed them after 5 minutes in the snow.
Also, things weren't running smoothly and the weather was moderate.
In contrast to yesterday, however, we were completely alone from bottom to top and were the first to set off. At some point, a lone snowshoe hiker came along at the summit.
Let's see how it goes next week....
