Snow report Monte Rosa / Zermatt, 03/23/2016
Frühlingstour von Arolla nach Zermatt
Snow condition
Snow quality
Overall impression
Snow condition
I would describe the snow conditions as average at the moment. For the time of year there is still enough snow for touring from 1500m.
Snow quality
This tour really had it all: crushed harsh snow, wind-pressed snow, a bit of bare ice on the ascent near Arolla, wind-blown powder (5-10cm), slush at the end of the tour. All in all, expected for this time of year
Risks
The avalanche situation in Valais is fairly relaxed. However, near the north face of the Matterhorn, there was a serac collapse that caused rocks and chunks of ice to fall down the valley as the day warmed up.
Overall impression
This tour, also part of the Haute Route, has an enormous amount to offer in terms of scenery. Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Dent d'Herence, Monte Rosa group etc... within sight. 1700 m elevation gain over 30 km. The icy easterly wind was the only small drawback on this magnificent tour.
