Snow condition
Despite the high starting altitude of almost 1700 m, descents are hardly possible in all exposures. It can certainly be "tinkered down" occasionally, but whether that's fun is another question. The snow depth at 1700 m will be around 20 cm + and at 2200 m around 50 cm +. The snow depth is quite inhomogeneous, as Obertauern is perfectly located in the wind corridor and therefore gets the perfect foehn drama. Occasionally, turns can be made in the terrain on leeward slopes. The off-piste options are very limited.
Snow quality
Due to the sunshine in the morning, the snow quickly became a little softer and quite pleasant to ride in areas protected from the wind. Otherwise, the surface was quite hard and wind-covered. The slopes were in good condition.
Risks
The snow cover made a very compact impression. Some sliding snow avalanches have already occurred in sunny exposures. The content of the LWD including warning level 1 can be confirmed. The main danger comes from terrain traps and the risk of falling. The ever-increasing Föhn storm has caused further avalanches at high altitudes.
Overall impression
A nice half day. The weather turned out to be better than the forecast and we were able to ride a few meters of altitude.
