The first thing I noticed when unpacking the goggles was the extravagant protective cover, the purpose of which was not entirely clear to me at first. After a little research, however, I realised its purpose: when I'm riding and have the goggles on my head, the protective cover is empty and the insulating layer can be used wonderfully for my bottle. A good idea from the three inventors. The three guys are Joonas Mattila (a gifted filmmaker), Krister Furnes Kopala (a splitboarder with a preference for challenging terrain) and his mate Nikolai Schirmer (a skier who feels particularly at home in couloirs and steep terrain).
You can guess that the three lads didn't just come together to sew together a warm insulating cover. If you're interested in what the three of them have been up to in the "Dream Zone", then sit back for just under half an hour and immerse yourself in "Revenge". While you're relaxing, you can also get an idea of the goggle that this Gear of the Week is all about.
Although this is not my first goggle from Julbo, it is the first with the 0-4 Reactive lens. The reactive lens reacts actively to the light conditions, so it is self-tinting. You can find a detailed explanation of the property and the different lenses here Julbo Reactive. That's why I was particularly curious about their suitability.
I've been wearing the goggles for around 30 days of skiing and can already say that I'm very satisfied with the fit/comfort, field of vision, ventilation and lenses. The wide strap (rubberised on the inside) keeps the goggles in place. To be honest, I think the inside of the strap is very stylish, almost too bad that you hardly ever see it :-) I find the flip-up lens function practical for short ascents. However, it's not suitable for long, sweaty climbs, as the foam gets damp and the goggles fog up anyway. When closing them, you have to make sure that the lens is well embedded in the frame and not slightly displaced. After practising a few times, however, you will have this under control. So far, the ventilation and moving parts have worked perfectly for me and I use the features a lot.
