Up until now, I've usually used a mix of windstopper and softshell for approaches, until I was given the La Sportiva Ascent jacket to test a few weeks ago. The jacket is made from a Technostretch fabric, which makes it comfortable to wear and also cuts a fine figure when climbing thanks to the elasticated material. The chest area is filled with PrimaLoft Silver Active padding, which protects and warms this area. The jacket is therefore perfect as a top layer when touring or as a warm mid-layer under a hard shell jacket.
The bright colours also make it a real eye-catcher, because as you would expect from La Sportiva, the jacket is available in bright, colourful combinations. So it's not so easy to get lost! I find the elasticated silicone band at the waist very practical, it prevents the jacket from riding up when you bend over or make larger movements. With my previous windstopper I usually missed the side pockets, so I find the two front pockets with zip really practical too. There is also an inside pocket with a zip that has an eyelet for headphones.
