When I held the jacket in my hands for the first time, I immediately noticed its extremely low weight. Accordingly, I was initially rather skeptical about the jacket's function. I can already anticipate it: my concerns were more than disproved in the practical test (approx. four weeks).
As described in the introduction, my first impression was mainly characterized by the low weight (approx. 300 grams, size L, I am 1.86 m and weigh 85 kg) and the associated scepticism about durability and thermal properties. On first contact, the jacket looks more like a paper bag than a seriously warm jacket. However, this feeling disappeared after trying it on for the first time. The Nuclei has a good, more body-hugging cut, which creates little unnecessary space that reduces the thermal properties. In short, they are super comfortable to wear. In the beginning, I mainly wore it as a mid-layer when I cycled to work (approx. 30 minutes), in all weathers (down to -20 degrees) it keeps me nice and warm and transports moisture well to the outside. I can only confirm these positive properties after the odd ski tour. I am also very positively surprised by the "odor development" caused by sweating, as I was rather sceptical here due to bad experience with my Primaloft jacket.
The outer material and lining are made of hard-wearing AireticaRipStop nylon (windproof, water-repellent), the insulation is Coreloft, a little more in the torso area (80 g/m²) than in the sleeves and side inserts (60 g/m²). In contrast to down filling, Coreloft is less sensitive to moisture and is less bulky. However, the "bulking power" is enormous compared to the amount of material used. There are elastic inserts on the cuffs that are not too tight, but still protect against cold draughts (for example when cycling). The Nuclei can be stowed quickly and compactly in the pack sack supplied. The hood is helmet-compatible, but has no adjustment option and can therefore restrict the field of vision.
Conclusion
Although I will probably use the jacket more for ski touring, its low weight and extremely small pack size make it a perfect companion for any type of mountain sport, in summer and winter. Whether on a ski tour summit or at a belay station on multi-pitch routes, the Nuclei is designed for "quick warmth" in between, as a mid-layer, or even as an everyday jacket (although its suitability for rain is rather limited). At around 220 euros, the price is not exactly a bargain and is less for those on a tight budget, but if its strengths are confirmed in the endurance test, it is definitely worth an investment.
In any case, Arcteryx has succeeded in creating a super compact, lightweight mid-layer suitable for everyday use with the Nuclei, which has already become my constant companion.
