New winter, new luck

Season opener!

by PowderGuide 10/16/2019
The morning wind is fresh, the leaves are becoming more colorful, the peaks whiter: Winter is just around the corner and the season is slowly getting underway again at PowderGuide. The PG core team takes the opportunity to indulge in the anticipation and discuss their individual ski destinations and weather wishes for the coming season.

What's going on at PG.com?

We'll soon be back with our usual weather service and regular editorial features. As well as the old favorites (PowderAlert, WeatherBlog, Gear of the Week), this season sees the return of Videos of the Week and - exciting! - there is a new column on the expanded topic of the environment and sustainability. More on this shortly.

We will also be filling the World of Science section with life more regularly again. Starting in November, we will be doing this on a fortnightly basis with articles on various topics from the last ISSW, the world's largest snow research conference. Our prediction game master Anselm - who researches avalanche dynamics as a sideline - was there and is in charge. Of course, he's also taking care of the prediction game again.

Our hard-working Conditions reporters will let you know as soon as it starts to snow. Some of them are already sliding around on icy glacier slopes, but of course we hope that this will soon no longer be necessary.

As always, we welcome feedback, suggestions, topic ideas and criticism. If you would like to let us know about editorial matters, please contact: redaktion@powderguide.com Please report any technical problems to: feedback@powderguide.com

Winter wishes

The PG team is looking forward to seeing the old acquaintances as well as the newcomers, who we will only really get to know over the course of the season. Our personal wishes for the coming ski season are a little more individual, as everyone has their favorite weather conditions and some go ski touring, while others prefer to shovel kickers:

Steffen Kruse - PG Switzerland

The most important goals are definitely to stay healthy and have fun. Of course I like it steep, technically/physically demanding and with a snorkeling alarm from November to April. But I also think it's great and dignified to stand on the summit with friends, cruise through the area and have a nice chat in the evening. I enjoy every summit that comes my way, I no longer plan by hook or by crook, but I grab the opportunity when it presents itself.

I'm also looking forward to introducing our young freerider in the Pulka to the mountain world in a comfortable and child-friendly way. And who knows, maybe we'll get our first straight line by the end of the season!

I think the best thing would be a heavy dump every two weeks, then stabilizing conditions, sun ski tours and then the next cap of snow. I like the wild, uncomfortable weather, snowstorms and -20 degrees, but I also like to burn my marble in the best weather.

I wish everyone out there joy, health and a great season!

Totti Lingott - PG Germany

My most important goal for this winter? Spending lots of time in the snow with our Paula and strapping the first slats under her feet. She can hardly wait and always complained last winter while sledging, "I want to go skiing!"' My second most important goal: With the hope of a strong southern winter and lots of snow in Bergell, I want to reach one or two more summits there this winter. The trip to the Forno hut last winter, which was characterized by wind and little snow, has once again fueled my winter interest in the Bergell!

Extreme weather conditions in the mountains are always very appealing, but with age I have really become more of a fair-weather skier - of course only because of the children! So here's what would be best: Lots of snowfall during office hours, and then always a few days of nice weather! But I would still go back to the Bergell in storms and snowfall - then just without the children

Lorenzo Rieg - PG Austria

I don't really have any big plans for the coming winter. After a year in Upper Styria, I'm now back in Tyrol and looking forward to the mountains here again. I would like to try out as many new things as possible, but knowing me, I usually end up back in the familiar ski resorts and on the familiar tours.

It would be great if I could avoid a floating snow foundation. For that to happen, it would probably have to rain heavily all the way up again. Otherwise, of course, I'd like to see a nice early start to the season with a few meters of base by the end of November! Then it can snow a lot, but it doesn't have to be all at once. I'd also love a nice late season with good, stable and not too warm weather in May and June.

Lea Hartl - Editorial Director

The last winter and a half I've been in quasi-exile in Interior Alaska, where all skiing is pretty complicated, so I'm now looking forward to the accessibility of the Alps again. However, I have to get used to all the other people out and about again! I want to ski as much as possible without it getting stressful, stay injury-free and not mess up in any other way.

Weather-wise, I'm hoping for an early, rich and widespread base that can then be built on with accumulations from changing directions. Of course, I don't want any persistent weak layers to develop. I'd also like it to get really cold again.

Alex Schober - Editorial and Social Media

I haven't made any specific plans for the coming season. After a fall on a steep face at the end of last season, I'll be taking it easier this season and am therefore hoping - at least for now - for fluffy powder snow until April. I'm planning a few multi-day ski tours with overnight stays in winter rooms and, of course, a few classic ski tours at the end of the season.

In general, I really like the change from days with lots of fresh snow to sunny days. I love looking out of the window and seeing white mountain peaks in the sunshine. Prolonged bad weather without any significant precipitation is not for me.

Johannes Wolf - IT Coordination

After unfortunately having to end last season in January due to an accident, my goal for this season is first and foremost to have an accident-free winter.

In April, I would like to go back to Norway or maybe even to Iceland for a ski tour. As I'm still studying alongside my work as an IT specialist, I hope that university won't be completely neglected during what will hopefully be a brilliant winter!

German Wehinger - CR

I'm basically letting winter come to me. Ski touring in general is very popular with me. At the moment, however, I'm still enjoying the fantastic bike park summer! If it suits, I'd like to reach the Schneeglocke, which would be great with a north-facing descent, and in general I'll be out and about a lot with the kids, which will bring me back to the groomed slopes.

Lukas Zögernitz - CR

In the 19/20 season, I'd like to get the best out of the conditions near my home in Innsbruck. So I wouldn't go on a restless search for the finest powder, but simply enjoy what the conditions offer: from powder runs to Figl madness.

If I could make a wish for the rest of the season now, it would be for a dry cool-down soon and then continuous snowfall. In any case, the main wish would be for a favorable course in terms of the stability of the snow cover. What I'm most looking forward to is a good amount of snow late in the season, as many people's heads are already in the summer by then. That's when you often experience lonely powder days at high altitudes.

Tobias Huber - Events

My goal for the coming season is to have as much free time as possible to ski and to keep my motivation constantly high! I'd like to continue biking until the end of November and then be out in the deep, cold powder again from the beginning of December to mid-January, preferably in the forest. Once I'm well practiced, I would then tackle a few lines in February and film them. From March at the latest, I'll then try to build a few backcountry kickers with my friends from time to time and then keep up a good mix of riding, filming and shoveling until the end of April/beginning of May.

Patrick Wehowski - Snowboard topics

My goals for this winter and the coming ones are pretty easy to describe. If possible, one or two ski tours, as close to home as possible, to keep the miserable driving to a minimum and to enjoy my time in the mountains, no matter what the conditions are like. More ambitious goals have taken a back seat for the time being, but fortunately I don't mind.

For me, the ideal season is characterized by the fact that there are no long-lasting, deep weak layers. To achieve this, it has to snow quite frequently and not get too cold in the intermediate phases. Ideally, at the start of the season, there should be a certain amount of cold first and then a few heavier snowfalls so that the temperature gradient is no longer a problem. The first snowfalls shouldn't be too cold either, so that the snow is a little more compact and the pines etc. are well covered.

And what are your plans?
