TouringTip | Watzmann crossing

Lonely ridge walk with a steep ski finale

by Adrian Sauter 02/05/2024
The Watzmann crossing is a famous classic in summer. In winter, far fewer summit aspirants get lost on the snow-covered and challenging ridge. The tour leads along an ideal route through one of the most beautiful parts of the Berchtesgaden Alps. If you follow the Watzmannruf in winter, you should be free from vertigo and be and experienced winter mountaineer. If you are prepared to cover over 2,400 metres in altitude and a distance of 23 kilometres in one day, you are guaranteed solitude and an unforgettable adventure.

Ascent

The start is at the Wimbachbrücke bridge next to Ramsau near Berchtesgaden. While it is still dark, the route heads south-east along forest paths steadily uphill towards the Stubenalm. After the alpine meadows, the route continues through thinning forest to the valley station of the Watzmannhaus material cable car.

Via serpentines to the Falzalm, just below the Falzkopf, it then climbs briefly before you reach the Watzmannhaus. The dawn greets you here at the latest and you can see the rest of the tour. From here, the route becomes much more alpine. The ridge towards Hocheck is initially climbed simply via the right flank, but the further you get, the more clearly you follow the ridge. If the conditions are not right here, you can still turn back in time. Later, a retreat becomes difficult.

The ridge becomes narrower and the first climbing difficulties have to be mastered. Soon the first of the three Watzmann peaks comes into view, the Hocheck at 2651 metres. After a short rest, the route continues along the sometimes airy ridge to the Mittelspitze, the main summit of the Watzmann at 2713 metres. Here, impressive views of the famous Watzmann east face open up. A few times you have to climb down or cross an exposed firn field. Steel cables can be used from time to time, but many are buried under the snow and require safe walking with crampons and ice axe.

Shortly before the Südspitze, we traverse upwards in a small snow gully to the right of the ridge. We are already standing on the last summit of the day, the Südspitze at 2712 metres.

Departure

This is where the interesting skiing part of the tour begins. First of all, you have to climb off the ridge to the south-west in a somewhat confusing manner until you reach larger, continuous snow fields. From here, cross keeping to the left and ski down into the Schönfeld. Do not go too far to the right into the Schönfeldgraben, as there are rockfalls lurking here. Keeping slightly to the left, descend through an alternation of beautiful gullies and open flanks.

Depending on the snow conditions, there are several options. Either take the summer trail down to the valley floor or descend in an easterly direction via a hidden gully. Both lead into a flat basin, which takes you to the Wimbachgrieshütte at 1347 metres. Now follow the Wimbach valley in a right-hand bend to the Wimbachschloss and head northwards as long as the snow conditions allow. In winters with little snow, it is worth taking walking boots in your backpack to cover the last few metres to the starting point on foot.

Other recommendations: Crampons and ice axe for the ridge. The 2nd degree of difficulty must be climbed. It is best to wait for a longer period of fine weather for well-placed snow. The tour is not recommended if there is a lot of fresh snow or if the weather is unsafe, as there is no quick retreat option along the entire ridge.
