Snow report Upper Black Forest, 01/26/2014

Ski tour on the Feldberg. Unfortunately still not good... And it's still pretty windy

Despite last week's snowfall, the situation is still bad. Compared to last weekend, the snow cover hasn't really increased, but now it looks at least a bit like winter further down. But appearances are deceptive, it's still not enough for sensible ski touring. The Baldenweger Buck is completely blown off and snow-free.

Disappointing once again. I don't know what it was like on the weekend, but today was all about skiing on melt, snow, wind and white stuff. Powder? Not a chance...

Risks

Very tricky. Five large avalanche cones on Baldenweger Buck and in Zastler Loch show this. I'm beginning to suspect that all the snow that falls on the Feldberg is immediately blown into a cornice and solidified. I can't believe that more didn't happen (yet) yesterday.

Well, at least it's not quite as crappy as it was two weeks ago and it looked like winter too. But still rather modest for the end of January. If something doesn't happen soon, it's going to be a very short winter.
