Snow condition
There was around 15 cm of fresh snow overnight. Unfortunately, this precipitation included rain up to around 1150 m. On today's ski tour, most of the precipitation came in the form of sleet. Thanks to the recent snowfall, the snow conditions in the Kitzbühel Alps are now ok for off-piste skiing. Nevertheless, the overall quantity is significantly worse than in recent years. In places exposed to the wind, the base is quite thin and streams, fences and other obstacles are not yet well snowed in. Due to the stormy wind, the snow conditions are quite inhomogeneous. You can easily reach the valley with the help of forest paths.
Snow quality
The sleet moves quickly and there is a lot of dust. However, you keep coming across drift snow as soon as you get out of the sheltered corners. This one didn't have a lid yet and was also easy to ride.
Wind drifted snow
Intensity: medium
Risks
Wind intensity: High (40 – 60 km/h)
On the "flat" terrain, you could often hear rumbling noises and once saw a small crack. We took a very defensive approach to both the ascent and the descent. The wind was quite strong on the ridge and in exposed places. We only went as far as the tree line. Due to the poor visibility and the warning signs, the options were also limited at this altitude. LWS considerable up to the tree line, LWS large above!
Overall impression
We actually wanted to do altitude meters with short ascents today. However, the lifts were closed due to the wind, so it was a pure ski tour with fewer downhill meters. On the other hand, we were on our own all day and the vertical meters gained are even more fun on the descent ;).
