Variations of snow cover

it's been worse but it's also been better at the beginning of January. you can't get all the way down on the north side without stone contact. The snow depth on the north side varies between nothing and 50cm in places. At least heavy snowfall started in the evening and improved the situation.

Wind drifted snow

Everything is there, from surface frost to wind press, old snow and drift snow. it has now snowed on the whole pile with strong winds. approx. 5 cm by 8 pm at 1500m. More to come. the wind was blowing all day and also very strongly for about 2 hours after the snow started to fall. it was enough to pile up to 30 cm of drifting snow. then the wind calmed down. So beware of the snow-covered danger

Better

The original plan was actually just to find some ice. This gave us a good insight into the snow cover in the region, which is still in need of improvement. In my opinion, stone skis are still recommended for most activities around the Hochgrat. Even after tomorrow's snowfall, the odd pebble or two cannot be avoided. If you have good local knowledge and know where there was enough snow before, you might be able to get down safely with premium goods.
