Whether you're on a ski tour, haute route or freeriding in the high mountains: glaciers harbour hidden dangers. In our "Glacier" troubleshooting course for skiers and splitboarders, you will learn how to prevent crevasse falls and how to free yourself safely in an emergency. With a mixture of theory and practice, mountain guides prepare you optimally for the glacier adventure.

Description

Are you travelling on glaciers on skis or a splitboard? Then you may already be aware of the danger of crevasse falls lurking invisibly under snow bridges. The "Glacier" troubleshooting course helps you to master these dangers. You will learn to recognise risky situations, avoid crevasse falls and use the necessary rescue techniques safely if the worst comes to the worst. The troubleshooting camp covers important topics such as:

  • Recognising crevasses and risk areas

  • Tour planning and route selection on the glacier

  • Basics of crevasse rescue and rope handling

  • Self ascent and group safety

At the end of the course, you will be well equipped to tour safely and confidently across glaciers - and if something does happen, you will know how to save yourself and others.
When registering, you have the option of specifying the language in which you would like to take part in the course (German, English, English & German).

Program

  • 1.5 days camp on Friday afternoon/evening & Saturday all day

  • Location: Titlis Glacier (crevasses in the Galtiberg & Steinberg)

  • Friday (indoor)

    • Basics in theory

    • Rope techniques

    • Knots

    • Material knowledge

  • Saturday (outdoor)

    • Practice on the glacier

    • Practical application of theory and testing knowledge directly in the terrain

    • Time for enjoyable descents

Equipment

Clothing:

  • Gore-Tex ski jacket

  • Ski trousers

  • Warm clothing

  • Gloves (2 pairs)

  • Cap or headband

  • Helmet

  • Ski goggles

Technical material:

  • Backpack (ideally ABS)

  • Avalanche equipment (avalanche transceiver, avalanche shovel, avalanche probe)

  • Freeride skis or splitboard

  • Skins & ski-crampons

  • Ski boots

  • Ski poles

  • Climbing harness

  • 4 x screw carabiners

  • Band sling 120 cm

  • Rep cord 4 m

  • Prusic sling

  • Abseiling device (ATC, figure of eight or similar)

  • Potentially: Ice axe and crampons

Other:

  • Sunglasses

  • Sun cream

  • Maybe: camera or GoPro

  • Ski ticket

  • Half-fare travelcard (if available)

  • Money for cable cars, taxi and drinks

  • Snacks

  • Notes
