South America Report Part III - Las Leñas Backcountry

Brilliant touring days on the summits around Las Leñas

by Moritz Morlok 09/18/2014
Last week we were spoiled every day with great weather, lots of sunshine and little wind. We were finally able to ski the peaks in the touring area around the ski resort. At high altitudes, we found set powder snow in all exposures and top-quality firn in the lower half.

Cerro Negro was our first destination, whose eastern flank probably offers the steepest runs in Las Leñas. Thanks to the already well-set powder snow, we only had to contend with a little sluff and were able to ski down smoothly. The next day we set off for Entre Rios, which with its mix of couloirs and spines is probably the most varied tour summit in this region. After a two-hour ascent, we enjoyed the best snow in fantastic terrain. We didn't want to miss out on a second round.

Torrecillas followed next with its many spines and gigantic rock towers, a real feast for the eyes and a delight for every freerider. The somewhat hidden Cerro Ponce still offers good untracked snow in its shady slopes days after the last snowfall. You can also find cool stone arches and rock formations here.

Most days were rounded off with firn runs in one of the couloirs in the lower part of the ski resort.

The last three days were limited to firn runs with short ascents out of the ski resort. After an exhausting week with lots of ascents and long days, everyone is tired. But the surprisingly good conditions every day leave no time for rest and relaxation.
