Lecture tip | SLF avalanche warnings on the subject of old snow

In his recently completed dissertation, SLF avalanche forecaster Frank Techel investigated how well avalanche bulletins reflect the actual danger situation and whether they are consistent across different regions and areas of responsibility of individual warning services. In this interview, he explains more about his work and his unusual career path.

Célia Lucas, 29, has been an avalanche forecaster at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos since last winter. In this interview, she tells us how she ended up in Switzerland from Luxembourg, about her day-to-day work at the SLF and how her profession also accompanies her on private ski tours.

SLF doctoral student Jürg Trachsel loves skiing and is happy when snow clouds bring fluffy powder. Professionally, he is also interested in the properties of snow, but then he swaps his skis for a microscope. He gets his samples from the real powder clouds and an artificial cloud in the lab that makes it snow at the touch of a button.
