Book tip: Engiadina Freeride

"Know all the secret spots!" - A small, really big freeride guide for the Upper Engadine

by Tobias Kurzeder 03/24/2015
There you go! The two Upper Engadin freeridersJürg Eugster and Kenny Scheidegger show that it can be done; and how: a small, thoroughly hip and all-round refreshing and fully professional freeride guide for the Upper Engadin. An area which, as we all know, is rarely blessed with huge amounts of snow, but has plenty of excellent terrain with great descents to offer.

So there you go! The two Upper Engadin freeridersJürg Eugster and Kenny Scheidegger show that it can be done; and how: a small, thoroughly hip and all-round refreshing and fully professional freeride guide for the Upper Engadin. An area that is known to be rarely blessed with huge amounts of snow, but has plenty of excellent terrain with great runs to offer.

Engiadina Freeride - the book

101 runs (it goes without saying that these are THE most beautiful freeride runs in the Upper Engadine) are presented on 242 pages. The two authors are locals who share their many years of experience and knowledge, which is honorable and likeable. All the well-known and lesser-known areas of the Upper Engadine are presented in detail and with many suggestions for downhill runs: from the former insider tip Maloja, to the classics Corvatsch and Diavolezza, all the way to Zuoz. The authors provide lots of useful tips on the first 50 pages of the book: Accommodation, how to get there, tips for going out and general information such as wildlife protection zones. For a guidebook of this type, the topic of avalanche risk checks and emergency management is dealt with in sufficient depth, although by no means exhaustively. And as it should be, by far the largest section of Engiadina Freeride is dedicated to the numerous freeride routes and descents, all of which are well described.

What makes the book so special?

Published at the beginning of 2015, this small, friendly work is really great: a cheeky layout, loving, hand-drawn, concise sketches, a well thought-out language of images and icons. All routes are illustrated in photos, giving a quick overview of the character of each line. Successful action photos that naturally make you want to head straight to the Engadin and immerse yourself in the powder there. Added to this is the wealth of background information provided by the two locals, which is incorporated into the texts and route descriptions. As if that wasn't enough, a good pinch of (sometimes biting) humor adds the finishing touch to this little masterpiece.
And is there nothing to complain about? The only thing small minds might find fault with this book is the poor quality printing and the thin paper, on which many of the outstanding photos lose some of their class. Nevertheless: full marks for Endiadina Freeride. Congratulations on your little masterpiece, Jürg and Kenny. The PG crew wishes you many readers (and buyers) and even more successful days in your local mountains.
