Roger Fischer has written a wonderful, compact freeride guide for the ski areas in the shadow of the Bernese Oberland triumvirate of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The Freeride Guide Jungfrau Region presents 43 rewarding descents with up to 2000 meters of altitude difference, which can be undertaken with mostly smaller ascents from the three Jungfrau ski areas Grindelwald First, Kleine Scheidegg - Männlichen as well as from the Schilthorn. It is particularly commendable, even if it goes without saying, that all the descents recommended by the author in his guide have been coordinated with the local nature conservation organizations and gamekeepers to ensure that they are compatible with nature and wildlife. The bilingual route descriptions (German and English) are very compact and sometimes even a little brief. However, as all the downhill routes are marked on Swiss national maps at a scale of 1:50,000 and all the downhill routes are illustrated with informative and very successful pictures of the character of the descent or tour, you never feel short of information. Tips on further information options, particular sources of danger and tips on scenic highlights round off this all-round successful freeride guide. A freeride guide should be like the Freeride Guide: concise, clear, easy to read and with great pictures.
We wish the author that his fine work will find many buyers. As the reviewer has already skied one or two of the featured descents himself, I can conclude with the personal tip that the Jungfrau Region, precisely because it is not as crowded as the well-known freeride top spots around it, is extremely worthwhile for a freeride tour trip lasting several days. And the book makes finding excellent descents virtually child's play...
