Event announcement | Shades of Winter Filmfest

#womenwhoshred

by Lisa Amenda 11/20/2018
Freerider and filmmaker Sandra Lahnsteiner is hosting the first Shades of Winter FilmFest in five cities from November 27 to December 13, 2018, showing her two latest films alongside films by Nadine Wallner, Arianna Tricomi, Lorraine Huber, Evelina Nilsson and Janina Kuzma, among others.

Okay, it's the middle of November. It's spring on the glaciers and in the foothills of the Alps? Golden fall. The temperatures are slowly dropping, but there's still no precipitation in sight. No rain and certainly no powder. But somehow you start to feel like starting the ski season. And not the kind where you have to fight for the best turns on a white ribbon with almost 20 racing teams. Rather, the kind where you no longer know which untracked descent to take next and where, to save time, you just have to grab the crushed cheese sandwich from your jacket in the lift to give yourself some energy. Well, since these circumstances are unlikely to happen any time soon, we'll have to make do with on-screen daydreams. That's where the new Shades of Winter FilmFest comes in handy.

Adventures and places of longing

Instead of a classic Shades of Winter screening, Sandra Lahnsteiner has organized an entire film festival this winter. From December 10 to 13, the festival will take place in Munich, Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck. The festival kicks off on November 27 in Stockholm. "The idea for the FilmFest had been around for a while, but the decisive impulse came spontaneously. Fortunately, I know a lot of projects by various female athletes and they were all enthusiastic about the opportunity to present their work," says Lahnsteiner, who has two short films in her program, COUPLES and CONNECTS. "Of course we want to light the fire with our films," explains the 38-year-old, "but above all we want to share our experiences, exchange ideas with like-minded people and show that anything is possible."

Eight to ten films between five and 25 minutes long are shown at each festival. As with her films, Sandra Lahnsteiner has brought together some of the best female freeriders on the scene. Different athletes will also be on site at each tour stop to talk about their projects.

The following films will be shown, among others:

Shades of Winter COUPLES

COUPLES is a new short film from Shades of Winter. Janina Kuzma, Julia Mancuso and Sandra Lahnsteiner take their partners into the snow for the first time and go on a freeride tour together in the mountains of British Columbia.

Taranaki

Originally, Janina Kuzma, Anna Segal and Evelina Nilsson wanted to travel to New Zealand's North Island to ski all four of the region's skiable volcanoes. Due to poor weather conditions and an ever-shrinking time window, the trip was eventually limited to one mountain: Taranaki. The three of them realized that it is not just a land mass that you can ski on, but a mountain with temperament and soul.

Shades of Winter CONNECTS

What connects a skier with a mountain biker and what can they learn from each other? Sandra Lahnsteiner wanted to find out in her second short film CONNECTS and met up with pro mountain biker Hannah Barnes to go skiing and mountain biking in Iceland.

Now or never

The short film Now or never shows the life of freeride pro Nadine Wallner. At freeride contests or skiing around the world. The film is driven by Nadine's intimate relationship with the Arlberg and her passion for freeriding.

La Luce Infinita

The newly crowned freeride world champion Arianna Tricomi celebrates the end of her season with a special kind of spring skiing. Together with a few ski-mad friends, she sets off on a trip to the far north, more precisely to the Norwegian village of Bergsfjord with its 50 inhabitants, where the sun hardly ever sets in spring. Hence the title of the film in Arianna's mother tongue, Italian: "La Luce Infinita" ("The Infinite Light").
