The quintessential Tyrolean national sport will be celebrated again on 14.4.2012 on Innsbruck's Nordkette mountain range. Anyone who enjoys snow and gliding should not miss out on this unique family event
Figl - bitte was?
Most native Germans, or almost all non-Tyroleans in general, will not have heard of "Figln". Figl are so-called "firn gliders". Short boards, around 50-60 cm long, which are used to get down the mountain efficiently and with fun on spring snow after you have climbed it in the sweat of your brow. In short: a descent aid for mountaineers. In some cases, Figl are also used on summer alpine tours to enable a quick return to the valley. In most cases, simple mountain boots are fixed to a board (usually old sawed-off skis or an aluminum profile). Emo Henrich from Innsbruck is considered to be the inventor of the firn glider, who applied for a patent for his invention in 1930.
The race
Nothing is known for sure, but on 14.4.2012 at the Innsbruck Nordkettenbahn - the epicenter of Figlsports - the race will start in teams of two. Presumably you will have to get from a kind of start to a kind of finish, possibly taking into account obstacles and presumably in the variant terrain. Those who do not yet have a partner can also look for a teammate directly at the start. "Being there is everything!"
