While the contests in Tyrol are mainly focused on battling for Freeride World Tour points, things are a little quieter and more independent in Vorarlberg: Alongside the Eric Themel Invitational (Freeride Festival) and the Back On Track Freeride Contest, the Nature Ride has been offering an innovative contest format for years: on February 23, 2013, it's all about backcountry freestyle on the Portla Horn in Damüls.
As a rule, contests of this type are invitationals marketed by energy drink producers or other large companies, which are only open to an elite circle of pros, known for example as Cold Rush, Linecatcher or Skiers Cup. At the Nature Ride in Damüls, every skier and snowboarder who is quick enough to register has the opportunity to take part: as is the case every year, the coveted starting places were snapped up after just 2 minutes during online registration!
The organizers from the Wicked Ruffneck Crew do their best to make the participation fee as fair as possible for the riders and also offer a lot on site: A contest face peppered with freshly shovelled kickers and lips is the playground where the riders can let off steam and put their skills to the test. Judged by experienced judges, the rider who collects the most points will receive the coveted Nature Ride Real Tree trophy. The categories of line choice, speed and safety, as well as the tricks performed, are the criteria that lead to victory. The starting field is divided into two disciplines: skiing and snowboarding. The supporting program is not neglected either, with entry to the afterparty with Gudrun von Laxenburg in the Remise Bludenz already included for all riders.
