Avalanche workshop by women for women

by PowderGuide 09/25/2016
Freeride pros Eva Walkner, Aline Bock and Jackie Paaso are launching an avalanche safety project for women together with ski guide Geli Kaufmann. The SAFE AS courses, which have been successfully training women in the USA since 2012, serve as a model. The first SAFE ON SNOW dates will take place in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the fall.

The three FWT professionals Paaso, Walkner and Bock talk about their experiences at the SAFE ON SNOW workshops, with the aim of boosting the self-confidence and decision-making skills of the participants. "As women, we professionals have found a way to be noticed and respected in a male-dominated industry. Not all women have this self-confidence," says Paaso, who was also involved in the founding of SAFE AS. Geli Kaufmann supports the team as head guide. The Arlberg ski guide has years of guiding experience, was active and successful in the Freeride Qualifier Tour at times and has practically leased a place on the podium (usually the top one) at the legendary White Ring.

The SAFE ON SNOW project in the Alps was initiated by two-time FWT winner Eva Walkner, who quickly won over the rest of the team. We had a brief chat with her about it and are already looking forward to the first workshops.

PG: Some of the founders of SAFE AS have experienced accidents themselves, which prompted them to set up the organization. Was it similar for you?

Eva: We had been talking about a project like this in Europe for some time. When Estelle died so tragically in the spring, I asked Aline and Jackie if they were still interested in starting the project. Then everything happened quite quickly ...

PG: Two prominent World Tour riders, Estelle Balet and Matilda Rapaport, died in avalanche accidents this year. Does the death of friends change your own behavior on the mountain? How do you deal with something like that?

Eva: Wow, that's a difficult question. When I heard about Estelle, I was just in La Grave. Aline called me. I was really devastated. And then Matilda ... That changes me. Estelle and Matilda weren't the only ones in the last few years. You think about a lot of things. I also want to look into the subject more intensively myself - you can never stop learning.

I've also made a lot of mistakes, especially in my early days, and I've been very lucky. But as humans are - you forget over time and the passion is just too great to give up the sport completely. But I've definitely become more careful over the years.

PG: What's the advantage of a workshop just for women?

Eva: We women just tick differently! We believe that there are still many women who mainly rely on their male colleagues and make few decisions of their own. However, it's important that every freerider, whether male or female, educates themselves as much as possible to be able to assess situations themselves and make decisions accordingly. In a group with only girls, a completely different group dynamic is created. We deal specifically with topics that concern us women and we speakers are also all female. We also want to get more women interested in our sport and create a community.

PG: Who is SAFE ON SNOW aimed at?

Eva: Our course is aimed at female skiers, snowboarders and ski tourers of all ages who enjoy off-piste skiing. Previous experience is not essential. We want to appeal to women with no previous knowledge who want to improve their skills, as well as sportswomen who want to refresh their existing knowledge.

PG: How exactly does the day with Safe on Snow work?

Eva: There is a theory session in the morning. With Angelika Kaufmann, who will lead the course, we have been able to recruit a top ski guide for our project. Geli will give an exciting and varied talk. Jackie, Aline and I will talk about our experiences. Then we'll go out into the terrain and learn or repeat how to use the safety equipment. The avalanche dog squadron and mountain rescue team will also support us. It's important to us that the girls retain as much of what they've learned as possible at the end of the day.

PG: What would you personally like to give the participants? What should they think about when they remember the day later?

Eva: They should not only feel more confident afterwards, but actually be more confident. Instead of simply following others, they should learn to listen to their feelings and use what they have learned. It's also about saying no when you're unsure, generally having more confidence and becoming more self-assured. We also hope that many women will meet up with us and exchange ideas and perhaps go freeriding or ski touring together from time to time over the winter.
