Ski goggles for all light conditions

by Patrick Fux 03/07/2014
Since mid-December I've been testing the Uvex Downhill 2000 Polavision Pro, the first time Uvex has combined Polavision technology to prevent reflections and light reflexes with a Variomatic lens, which adapts to the prevailing light conditions by brightening and darkening. In my personal experience over the last 6 weeks, this has been a successful marriage!

Since mid-December I have been testing the Uvex Downhill 2000 Polavision Pro, the first time Uvex has combined Polavision technology to prevent reflections and light reflexes with a Variomatic lens, which adapts to the prevailing light conditions by brightening and darkening. In my personal experience over the last 6 weeks, this has been a successful marriage!

Test

The specified protection levels S2 (sunny and cloudy in the mountains and S3 very sunny) are covered to our complete satisfaction. The adjustment to the different light conditions works excellently. I have also worn the goggles during heavy snowfall and was positively surprised at how good the vision was, compared to normal goggles designed for these poor light conditions, the result was quite respectable. In very bright light, the tint is not quite enough for me, but it should be mentioned here that I have been very sensitive to light since a laser treatment.

I would like a slightly smaller version as the goggles combined with a helmet pushes the nose down a little. However, draughts between helmet and goggles have never been a problem. So far, I've only had problems with the goggles once: a heavy storm with very fine snow crystals in the air managed to tarnish the goggles between the lenses and snow got on the inside. An intensive session with the hairdryer solved the problem between the lenses. Gently polishing the inside with a special cloth also helped here. Without polishing, the glasses were no longer usable as the deposits on the inside together with the Polarvision led to a kind of 3D effect which was extremely annoying.

Note: Always polish with a cloth designed for this purpose, my first attempt with a handkerchief immediately led to scratches which have been with me irrevocably ever since...

Fogging: I rarely have problems with this and with these glasses there was at most a very short fogging on the very outside of the rim and this can also be remedied by a very short "airing".

Conclusion

Successful product that convinces. From cloudy to sunny, always the right goggles, but only for those who are tough, otherwise a second pair of goggles is still recommended for very poor light conditions. Don't forget a special glasses cloth, otherwise your expensive glasses will be scratched in no time.

Advantages & disadvantages; Disadvantages

+ large field of vision
+ the right goggles from cloudy to sunny thanks to Variomatic
+ improved contrast thanks to Polarvision
+ effective ventilation prevents fogging well thanks to Supravision
- relatively expensive
- a little large, nose is pushed down depending on the helmet
