The umF ski project is a social integration project that was launched in winter 16/17 and familiarizes unaccompanied underage refugees with Tyrolean culture by teaching them to ski and sharing experiences with their peers.
At weekly meetings, the first step was to work out together what was needed for skiing. Ski clothing was collected from the Innsbruck scene (many people are happy to give away ski jackets, but it's more difficult with ski underwear) and a sponsor was found for the actual ski equipment. After the first attempts in the Kinderland, the leap to the big lifts was quickly made and cornering and braking are already working quite well. However, the most fun, much to the chagrin of the ski instructors, is going as fast as possible.
After the umF students had already spent a few days skiing, the group met up with a school class from Innsbruck on two afternoons. The umF students first took part in a sports lesson with the class, followed by a return visit to the refugee home in Scharnitz so that the young people could get to know each other's environment. Afterwards, everyone spent a weekend together at Haus Gufl on the Glungezer, with lots of different games and activities. The crowning glory of the season was a day of skiing together in Küthai and a pasta party in spring.
