End of the 2017 season | Snow height tip game

The winter of 2016/2017 started late and was mixed - but ended with a snowy and cool April, so that we all still managed to get in a reasonable number of days of skiing. Now, however, there is already a clear trend towards summer. Of course, that doesn't mean you have to put your skis in the cellar! Conditions are still very good at high altitudes! On Friday, there are signs of another drop in temperature with plenty of fresh snow and at the weekend, you're sure to find one or two people in the mountains with two poles (or a board) under their feet. However, PowderGuide is already "officially" going on summer break (weather forecasts have been discontinued), because we have a bigger project ahead of us! The steady increase in visitors and the extensive responses to last year's survey have encouraged us to go back to a complete overhaul of the PowderGuide website! We are confident that we will have a new look in the fall - new functional components will then be added bit by bit. The PowderGuide website should then not only be visually modern, but also finally meet the current mobility requirements for websites!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the PG supporters, authors, CRlers, WetterBloggers, Schneestöberern and PowderAlerts for their contributions and the users, sympathizers, FB friends, etc. for the many visits and interest in our project. We will do our best to continue to bring you current and interesting topics next winter as usual.

Snow depth prediction game enters the final round

Since last season, PowderGuide.com has been running the PowderAlert snow depth prediction game, in which participants can put their weather and snow forecast analysis skills to the test and predict the amount of snow for a specific measuring station in a specific period. A new tipping game was announced for each PowderAlert, with a daily prize for the best tip. The three best overall tipsters were rewarded with attractive prizes from Mammut. The main prize is a brand newMammut avalanche airbag 3.0 (subject to availability)! Second place will be honored with aMammut Pulse Barryvox LVS. And the third place on the podium will receive a set of Mammut avalanche shovel and probe (selection subject to availability). It makes sense that the end of the season is not the amount of powder that will fall in the next few days, but - you guessed it - the amount of snow that will melt in the next few days!

The valleys are green, the mountains white: at low altitudes it's summer, further up it's spring and above 2200m many areas of the Alps still have super sizzling firn. Hardly anyone is still thinking about powder - now it's all about the crust and whether or not it's wearing. The crust forms due to daily melting and freezing cycles in clear weather - of course. But how much snow does the daily melting eat away from the snowpack? The prediction game will answer this question over the next seven days.
